Court Online Nationwide Roll-Out Gains Momentum

On 1 July 2025, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms. Mmamoloko "Nkhensani" Kubayi addressed the National Assembly on the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) Budget Vote, reaffirmed government’s commitment to modernising South Africa’s courts through digital innovation.

“The court system remains a key priority for the OCJ to improve access to justice in terms of that programme.”

Court Online, the flagship project of the Integrated Justice System (IJS), is being rolled out in partnership with the OCJ. This programme is central to the broader justice sector modernisation initiative, which focusses on digitisation, integration, and improved access to legal services.

“The OCJ has continued to appraise with the roll out of Court Online system to various superior courts following a successful piloting of the system in the Gauteng Division of the High Court.”

Court Online enables legal practitioners and litigants to file court documents electronically, from anywhere, reducing backlogs and simplifying processes across courts. The system is now fully operational in Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, and its rollout in the Eastern Cape is expected to conclude by end of July 2025.

“Court Online provides a platform for law firms and litigants to file documents to the court electronically over the internet from anywhere they are located and is now fully operational; in Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and currently underway in the Eastern Cape which is expected to be concluded by end of July 2025.”

The platform is also being progressively introduced in the Land Claims Court, Labour Court, and Labour Appeal Court, bringing the justice system closer to full digital readiness.

“It is also being progressively implemented at the Land Claims Court and Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court. The envisaged full implementation of all these processes, will enhance access to quality justice for all and the effectiveness of running our courts.”
